Thoughts for Thursday

April is Autism Awareness Month. I am the mother of a 21 year old son with Asperger syndrome. All of you know someone who is on the spectrum. Think about that person you know who is socially inept, the "odd duck." Those with Asperger's want to connect with others but lack the skills for small talk. They find it nearly impossible to decipher body language that we "normal" people innately understand. I would ask you to be kind, tolerant and accepting of those on the spectrum. It will be appreciated more than you will ever know.

Here is a link to learn more about Aspergers.

Thanks -

  1. I really think I'm married to one. Seriously. He is brilliant, but hasn't got a clue sometimes.....most of the time.

We taught sunday school for years and had a couple of kids with it. It was much easier to deal with when you knew that there was something going on other than obstenance.

I'd say give your son a hug for me....but he probably wouldn't like it.

  2. I read 'Look Me in the Eye' and got a glimpse of Aspergers. All the best for your son. The world is hard enough. My own son had multiple learning disabilities and I know it is a struggle.

  3. I have a niece with Williams's syndrome and know a few children with Aspergers. I agree totally that kindness and tolerance will be greatly appreciated ~ not just with Aspergers, but with all that most don't consider "normal". Open yourself up to them and you might just learn a thing or two! :)

  4. Thank you for the reminder. So many get caught up in "our" day to day we forget about others struggles.
