Dotty doubling on Design Wall Monday

So last Monday there were 9 of these dotty 36 patch blocks on my design wall.

This Monday there are 18, a doubling of dotty Kaffe Fassett/Phillip Jacobs/Brandon Mably goodness. I don't have enough of the polka dot fabrics to make all 36 blocks that I need for this quilt so in some of the blocks I've used the Aboriginal Dot fabric, like it this block.

I love that pansy fabric too! Out of this batch of 9 new blocks this one is in my favorites along with this one....

and this one...

Oh heck - they are all my favorites! Last Monday I had dreams of finishing all 36 blocks I need for this quilt. It is going to be a LARGE version of the Leap Year quilt from Miss Rosie using a setting I found on another blog. Now it is obvious that those dreams had to have been fueled by fumes of spray starch and the Cherry Lemonade Yankee Candle I was burning and the fumes muddled my little pea brain into thinking that 36 blocks each with 36 patches could be done in a couple of hours -- WRONG!

It takes time to get all those seams to match and it takes time to figure out which two fabrics I want to pair together. Sometimes the selection process is even longer than the sewing time as I agonize over whether to use a certain fabric right now, or save it for a better block. I believe that this is the root cause of why I have so much stash. I can hardly bear to sew with some of my special fabrics because I'm afraid I'll use it all up and they won't make it again or something even better will never ever appear. Now rationally I know this is a total fallacy since my shelves are quite stuffed with wonderful fabrics that aren't that old. And Kaffe and all the designers at Westminster, and Moda, and Robert Kaufmann, and Hoffman, and Riley Blake and a myriad of other fabric manufacturers haven't run out of good fabric designs for the last 25 years and every time I see new stuff I want it too! So I'm trying to use what I have. And I keep telling myself - they'll make more and it is a given, like the sun rising in the east, I'll buy more- LOL!

It is going to be a crazy week with the 4th of July falling on a Wednesday. Hope you have great plans and nice weather to celebrate!

Happy stitching-

  3. Oh, How cool! I ahve always wanted to do one of these quilts. Maybe I will need to get my scrap bins out and just start sewing and see if I can make a dent in them.......

  6. You are making great progress. I like this approach to busting some of those untouched fabrics on our shelves. Just wish we had 48 hours in a day and that we only needed 2 hours sleep to recharge our bodies. That would leave 46 hours to sew and quilt!!

  9. Those are amazing blocks! I am afflicted with the same ailment. I would get so much more accomplished if I would stop worrying about such things. I have 36 yards of Meadow Friends I snagged for $5/yd and do you think I can bring myself to cut into it? Nope.

  10. Sometimes it works to tell myself that there will be more fabulous fabrics designed in the future that I will love even more than the ones I am passing up today...I do try to control my fabric buying...doesn't always work.
